What Is America To Me

Those are the opening words to “The House I Live In,” a song made popular by Frank Sinatra and Paul Robeson. I started thinking about this song (and more specifically, how it was used in Charles Burnett’s Killer of Sheep) after one of the most memorable, diverse 4th of July’s that I can recall. But before I go on a rant about how racist L.A. is, I’ll just tell you what I did yesterday.

It started off with a 5 hour, 12 mile hike with my dad through the Big Santa Anita Canyon. Unfortunately, the road to the trailhead at Chantry Flats was closed for the holiday. That 3 1/2 mile stretch uphill was pretty brutal, but luckily it was early in the morning and the weather was somewhat tolerable. Once we reached the trail, it was cool and shady with lots of beautiful trees. Our final destination was Sturtevant Falls, about 50 ft. high cascading into a small pool that looked really inviting after such a long hike.

The next destination was Din Tai Fung in Arcadia for lunch. This place is always packed, but that’s the price you pay for the best dumplings in town. I will have to try the Hot and Sour soup the next time I’m back. In the adjacent plaza is a small shop (I forget the name) that serves Mango Shaved Ice with Konjac (aka “Mango Bin” in Chinese). Konjac is something similar to Jello. The mango was kind of sour and the shaved ice wasn’t shaved thin enough for my taste, but I didn’t care too much. It was effing hot outside.

Later in the evening, I called up Justin C. and we made the trek to Leimert Park. It’s a small neighborhood where Vernon and Crenshaw intersect. Yes, I guess it would be considered South Central, but it felt more like Harlem to me, not the South Central that’s depicted in the movies. I had a hunch that there would be some jazz out there on the 4th of July, and wouldn’t you know it, we were treated to an outdoor concert on Degnan. The smoking session was lead by Billy Mitchell on the piano. They played some blues, Brazilian, and old standards like My Funny Valentine. Dave Winfield came up to the mic and did a rousing rendition of an old B.B. King tune. Although I kind of wished the soul food restaurants were open that night. I was eyeing out the fried catfish and fries at the Shabbazz stand across from the stage, but passed when it looked like the food had been sitting out there too long.

Finally, dinner at Fred 62 in Los Feliz (where I can never pass up the Fred MacMurray), beers at the Shortstop, and a late night showing of Transformers at the Vista. The Vista is probably my favorite theater in town. Tickets are cheap, leg room is ample, and it has an old school Egyptian vibe to it. Oh yeah, I actually enjoyed Transformers. Hooray for America!

Space is the Place

Spaceland that is. Caught 2 of my favorite local yokel acts, Merle Jagger and Welldiggers Banquet at the club in Silverlake. Just having a good time and cutting a rug with some of the ladies by the end of the night. I do a jitterbug-twist-country-hoedown-knee-slapping thing when the spirit moves me. I have yet to come up with a name for it. Maybe I’ll call it the “PBR Shuffle.”

Also in the house that night was Sweet Crude Bill and the Lighthouse Nautical Society, a folky assemblage of hipsters and country low-lifes from SanFran. I briefly talked to the bassist/vocalist Anne who reminds me of Alison Lohman. I was also impressed with Bucksworth, a country rock outfit from the Inland Empire. Their bluesy version of Velvet Underground’s Cool It Down (my personal favorite from Loaded) was a highlight.

Barter 4 Life

So I helped a friend move into her new place yesterday and in exchange for my services, she offered to give me a free month’s membership at the gym where I work out.  That really got me thinking about how I could creatively barter my way through these trying times, like the man from Montreal who traded his paper clip and eventually got a house.  Now I won’t be able to trade Fleetwood Mac albums for this month’s rent–even though my landlord is a big Fleetwood Mac fan.  But what about piano lessons for gas money?  Let me know if you’re interested!

Karaoke Alert!

@ the Smog Cutter on Virgil Ave.  I went to this local dive with Pat K.  His quote of the night was, “This place reminds me of the Hill District.”  Enough said.  I will never sing “Lyin’ Eyes” again.  That song is really depressing.  Come to think of it, the Smog Cutter is the most depressing karaoke bar in L.A.  I should’ve realized this when some former co-workers and I got kicked out of the place a year or two ago for trying to liven things up.  There’s the annoying Thai server who shrieks out “I love you long time” during every break in Lionel Richie’s “Hello.”  The old Asian salaryman who sings Celine Dion.  Overweight Ben Kinglsey with a voice that’s a cross between Louis Armstrong and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins singing “Have I Told You Lately That I Love You.”  You get the picture.

Life’s Answers in a Nutshell

OK. So I haven’t been feeling well lately. In fact, ever since I quit my job on the 1st, I’ve been asking the same question that Corey Dillon asks himself everyday, “Who am I?” Sorry, that’s a bad inside joke that maybe 4 people in the universe understand. Yes, those same 4 people saw me in Connecticut last month dancing in the endzone like I was the Chad Johnson of ultimate frisbee. Well, ever since then, I’ve lost my swagger, lost my desire for the game. Hopefully, this blog will change all of that. I’m doing this to let you all know that as I sit here in prison with my bread and water, I am training, I am doing my push-ups, I’m doing whatever I can to stay focused and reach the goals I’ve set for myself. Basically, I’m going to try to make my life as interesting as possible in order to provide material for this blog! :) And if it seems like I may be going off the deep end at any moment, somebody let me know!

While you’re waiting…

Who knows when I’ll get around to posting a new 7 round mock?  Check out these sites until I can get my act together.

NFL Draft Blitz – Tony Conty is the Matt Lauer of the NFL Draft.  Just read his latest interview where he digs deep into the soul of Horatio Benedict Blades.

The NFL Draft Site - When most sites just list a top 5 for kickers and punters, Robert Bryant goes out of his way to do 10.  That’s the sign of a true NFL Draft die-hard.

and some sites that have nothing to do with the draft…

L.A. Department of Public Health – In case you ever wondered if that pupuseria down the street was worth checking out.

Kent Cyclone – Listen to Cyclone What.  And if you still don’t know what a cyclone is, look it up on Wikipedia.

A 7 round mock before the Super Bowl

You saw it here first. Just want to put it out there and get your thoughts. In retrospect, the 1st round is pretty screwed up. I’ll probably do a major overhaul after the combine. Thanks.
